BMW X5 VS Mercedes GLE
When it comes to hybrids, there is no doubt that the BMW X5 and the Mercedes GLE are currently leading the pack. If you are in the market for a powerful hybrid SUV, then chances are you've been considering each of these models. But with both top-of-the-range vehicles boasting so many great features, it can be difficult to know which one to choose.
Here we compare the BMW X5 vs the Mercedes GLE to help you decide which hybrid is best for you.
Efficiency and Performance
Both vehicles have an impressive engine set-up: the BMW X5 boasts a 3.0 litre, six-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine which, when combined with the electric motor, gives an output of 389bhp, and the Mercedes GLE's own engine produces 316 bhp.
The BMW X5 has a speedy acceleration of 0-62mph of 5.6 seconds, while the Mercedes GLE lags behind at 6.9 seconds.
One advantage of hybrid cars is that their fuel engines are assisted by an electric engine, thus lowering carbon emissions and making them a more eco-friendly option. The BMW X5 emits 27-32g/km of C02, while the Mercedes GLE comes in a little lower at 19-23g/km. While the BMW X5 relies on a petrol engine, the Mercedes GLE runs on diesel, giving it a more palatable fuel economy of 314-353 mpg, as opposed to the BMW X5's 201.8-235.4 mpg.
The BMW X5 has an all-electric range of 51-55 miles, but is just pipped by the Mercedes, who can clock in an impressive 55-58 miles on battery power alone.
Comfort and Features
Of the two vehicles, the Mercedes GLE is probably the more comfortable, coming with air suspension and four-wheel drive as standard, and a smooth nine-speed automatic gearbox. The BMW X5 however, is surprisingly nimble and agile considering its bulk, making it a more exciting drive.
Due to their batteries, neither car is available with 7 seats, but still feel roomy with 5. Boot space is pretty similar, with the Mercedes GLE able to hold 490l, and the BMW X5 slightly above this at 500l.
Both cars come with advanced infotainment systems, and sleek interiors. The BMW boasts a minimalist and driver-focused dashboard design, while the GLE's widescreen display, Nappa leather and oak finishings give a traditional and luxury feel.
Safety
The Mercedes GLE is packed with safety features, including an Urban Guard vehicle protection package which offers all-round monitoring of the car's surroundings, a Pre-Safe system and Active Brake Assist. The BMW X5's system is less extensive, but this model has been equipped with extra safety features such as additional airbags. Both cars benefit from parking sensors, cameras and assistance.
Price and Value
Both the BMW X5 and the Mercedes GLE are leading hybrid SUVs, but if you are looking for a cheaper deal, the BMW X5 has a starting price of £69,925, as opposed to the steeper Mercedes GLE, which ranges from £72,805 to £80,605.
Verdict
If you are considering either the BMW X5 or the Mercedes GLE, then the good news is that with either choice you will be purchasing a top-of-the-range hybrid SUV, guaranteed to give a high performance in the years to come.
If you are looking for a traditional set-up with tons of safety features, and money is no object, then the Mercedes GLE might be the best choice, while if you're looking for something a little cheaper but with speed on its side and an ultra-modern feel, then we would recommend the BMW X5.
