There's also the fact that so many leading manufacturers are making brilliant models that are powered by electricity these days. For all these reasons and much more, it's little surprise that some of the nation's favourite celebrities drive electric cars. In fact, their choices might even help inspire your next purchase. From footballers to TV presenters - and even royalty! - celebrities love getting behind the wheel of an electric car:

Lorraine Kelly - the TV star loves her Nissan Leaf so much that she once tweeted photos of her posing in it. The Leaf can travel 168 miles on a single charge.

Gok Wan - the fashion expert drives an award-winning Vauxhall Ampera. 'I have to drive a car which gives me flexibility for both long and short journeys,' he said in a statement, 'Oh and because it's electric, I don't have to pay the congestion charge'.

Carol Vorderman - the presenter is also a fan of the Vauxhall Apera. She says it is 'so easy to charge' by pressing it at a point in the wall, and she they are a 'fantastic piece of engineering'.

Will.i.am - the singer and TV judge is, unsurprisingly, at the top of the electric car game, with his super high-tech customised Tesla Model S.

Prince Harry - electric cars have the royal stamp of approval! When he lived in England, Prince Harry was regularly photographer driving a Audi E-Tron 55, which was Audi's first ever electric car.

Rowan Atkinson - a world away from Mr Bean's MINI, the actor has been photographed driving the BMW i3, which can travel 153 miles on a single charge.

Gary Neville - the former footballer, who also owns an eco-house, drives around in the sporty and sophisticated BMW i8 model.

Tom Hanks - the Hollywood star was an early adopter of electric cars back in 2009, when he famously put 50,000 miles on one of the original Toyota RAV4 EVs.
